Smell That Smudge
Hello there today, just a few words about smudging because it’s been around a long time, and there’s tons of information out there. Thanks to the internet, it’s easier than ever to read up on. However, we have lost the connection of information handed down to us by the Wise Old Shamans or Elders, who had lifetimes of practical use and instruction given to them by their Ancestors.
Smudging has become a somewhat controversial subject, so I realize there will be many opinions about what is or isn’t acceptable protocol, who can or can’t prepare it, how to use it, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera. Why this has now become a thing is beyond my comprehension, my own opinion is that someone’s Ego has taken control and they believe themselves to be the smudge police. So, I’m like who appointed them as the authority on a cross cultural, spiritual practice that is thousands and thousands of years old.
Let me tell you about my first experience with it. It was about 40 years ago when my then young family and I moved into a house. Well…at about 2 AM move in day #1, I was roused out of bed by a violent poltergeist. This was a 911 paranormal situation, I lit candles, poured salt, prayed, and the only sage I had was ground cooking sage, so as unconventional as it was, I burned ground cooking sage and used it to clear the house. It worked. We never had violent spirit activities again. So, for those who find all the rules confusing, just remember that your intentions are the strongest influence on any works you are doing.
We associate the practice with the beautiful Native American cultures, however the burning of herbs, resins, or oils for spiritual purpose, goes way, way, way back. Archeologic evidence has shown that it has been part of religious practices around the world further back than 5,000 years BC. The Greeks burned sage along with other herbs in their temples as offerings, so did the Egyptians, Buddhists, Catholics, Europeans, Celts, and Chinese, and the South American indigenous people all on different continents, all burning sacred herbs, oils, and resins to invite a closer connection with their Divinities. To drive out evil spirits, to heal diseases, invocation of Ancestors, protection, and multitudes of other purposes. The scents and the rites may have been different, but the intentions are the same.
We can make the most of our sacred burning rituals by having clear intentions, inviting in blessings and our Ancestors, protection or clearing space to have a ritual in, aromatizing, and cleansing our energy field. Light up your favorite blend, there are multiple combinations available at Enchanted Cottage with their little tags telling their properties.
You may find using smudge sticks for releasing that which isn’t for your greater good as beneficial as I do.
Light it up!!!! release that junk into the smoke as it curls up and carries those prayers, negative thoughts, and emotional blocks far, far away.
